Title of Dissertation: HEAVY AND LIGHT TRAFFIC REGIMES FOR M |G|∞ TRAFFIC MODELS Konstantinos P. Tsoukatos, Doctor of Philosophy, 1999 Dissertation directed by: Professor Armand M. Makowski Department of Electrical Engineering The M |G|∞ busy server process provides a class of structural models for communication network traffic. In this dissertation, we study the asymptotic behavior of a network multiplexer, modeled as a discrete–time queue, driven by an M |G|∞ correlated arrival stream. The asymptotic regimes considered here are those of heavy and light traffic. In heavy traffic, we show that the arising limits are described in terms of the classical Brownian motion and the α–stable Lévy motion, under short– and long–range dependence, respectively. Salient features are then effectively captured by the exponential distribution and the Mittag–Leffler special function. In light traffic, the analysis reveals the effect of two aspects of the M |G|∞ process, i.e., the session duration distribution G and the gradual nature of the arrivals, as opposed to the instantaneous inputs of a standard GI|GI|1 queue. We exploit these asymptotic results to construct interpolation approximations for system quantities of interest, applicable to all traffic intensities. Association between light absorption measurements of PM2.5 and distance from heavy traffic roads in the Mexico City metropolitan area.

OBJECTIVE To study the relationship between light absorption measurements of PM2.5 at various distances from heavy traffic roads and diesel vehicle counts in Mexico City. MATERIALS AND METHODS PM2.5 samples were obtained from June 2003-June 2005 in three MCMA regions. Light absorption (b abs) in a subset of PM2.5 samples was determined. We evaluated the effect of distance and diesel vehicle c...

Gaussian queues in the heavy/light-traffic regime

In this paper we investigate Gaussian queues in the light-traffic and in the heavy-traffic regime. The setting considered is that of a centered Gaussian process X ≡ {X(t) : t ∈ R} with stationary increments and variance function σ X(·), equipped with a deterministic drift c > 0, reflected at 0: Q (c) X (t) = sup −∞<s≤t (X(t)−X(s)− c(t− s)). We study the resulting stationary workload processQ (c...

Heavy Traffic Methods in Wireless Systems: towards Modeling Heavy Tails and Long Range Dependence

Heavy traffic models for wireless queueing systems under short range dependence and light tail assumptions on the data traffic have been studied recently. We outline one such model considered by Buche and Kushner [7]. At the same time, similarly to what happened for wireline networks, the emergence of high capacity applications (multimedia, gaming) and inherent mechanisms (multi-access interfer...

Two Coupled Queues with Heterogeneous Traffic

We consider a system with two heterogeneous traffic classes, one having light-tailed characteristics, the other one exhibiting heavy-tailed properties. When both classes are backlogged, the two corresponding queues are each served at a certain nominal rate. However, when one queue empties, the service rate for the other class increases. This dynamic sharing of surplus service capacity is remini...

Normalized Model of Traffic Light Traits Based on Colored Pixels

Nowadays, because of the growing numbers of vehicles on streets and roads, the use of intelligent controlsystems to improve driving safety and health has become a necessity. To design and implement suchcontrol systems, having information about traffic light colors is essential. There are the wide variety oftraffic lights in terms of light intensity and color. Therefore it seems that design and ...
